When we sail, we have to employ a trained skipper and a lock keeper. There is also the added expense of fuel oil and passenger ship insurance.
Our engine and generators must be serviced every week and cruising creates a lot of wear on the motors and exterior paint finish.
We have to pay the Marine Safety office €2k pa, plus a cost of €15k for our annual MSO out of water inspection. Waterways Ireland charge us for all the jetty utilities installations and charge us an annual fee for using the canal.
We generate our own electricity, store our water and waste and organise our quayside lighting, refuse and glass collection.
That’s why we have a €5 surcharge. It’s not profiteering, it’s just an expensive business … but it’s worth it for you.
